Decide whether the planned entertainment
is to be interactive (games, photo booths, sports
tournament, Tarot card readers, a casino,
circus school, karaoke,
sundae station, etc.), a performance (singer/band, DJ, magician, circus,
fashion show, etc.), location specific (local dancers, a private tour
of a museum after
hours, a trip to an eco-reserve, snorkeling,
surfing lessons, etc.,) adult themed or family-friendly.
The entertainment should always be appropriate to the guests, in terms
of numbers, age, gender, sensibilities, etc. A ribald left-wing comic
was booked as a last minute replacement at a thank you event
for financial contributors to a conservative political candidate. Outraged
guests booed her; she continued performing and was eventually dragged
off the stage by security guards. The event coordinator had a lot of
explaining to do! Right from the start, the contract with the entertainment
provider should include conduct guidelines. Unless the organizer knows
for a fact that a riskier act will go over well, it is always better
to err on the side of safety.
