If the event is
being held out of town or will attract many non-local attendees, a positive
impression can be created through directed access to local tourist
attractions. It is often possible to arrange evening tours of museums,
galleries, and local landmarks. A short guide to local interest points,
along with information on any arranged tours should be part of the registration
package. When designing this info kit, keep in mind the event’s
primary goals and timelines. Will a round trip of four hours be a chance
for team building or will the featured speaker face a half-empty room?
Most areas have a tourist
board that will happily provide information on local attractions, contact
numbers for key booking personnel, and the tourist
board may be able to arrange special treatment and goody bags for
event guests (A convention
of food suppliers in Philadelphia had their main social event in the
famous covered Market on a Friday evening). There are numerous online
resources that can be found with a simple search by keying in the name
of the area, tourist attractions, tourist board, and city hall.
