Relying on street parking, especially for medium and large events,
is risky. There are usually municipal regulations that dictate the length
of allowable parking time (often less than the duration of the event).
In many cities, the majority of the street parking is reserved for neighbourhood
residents. If the event
is located in a commercial district, regular users of the area will
be competing for parking with event attendees. If the parking is metered,
event attendees must dash out every few of hours to plug the meter or
risk a ticket or towing.
If street parking is the only option, and there is no budget for shuttle
vehicles from an alternate parking area, then it will be necessary to
try and negotiate a special use permit from the municipality. Special
event parking is often contentious, so it can be very helpful if a member
of the local business association or even one of the city councillors
approaches the permit department on behalf of the event
organizer.
