Motor vehicles of some sort are usually the most practical way to move
people during an event. But, if it suits the type of event (i.e., staff
appreciation, product launch, convention, wedding,
fundraising gala, etc.), there are memorable alternatives, depending
on the city. For example, in Ottawa or Amsterdam, canal barges are available,
as are bike rentals,
both modes an excellent way to appreciate the scenic aspects of the
cities’ core district and parks. Most cities have horse
drawn carriage companies, but a northern city may also have sleigh
rides in the winter, while a western city may have cowboy-style hay
wagon rides available.
Vancouver has water ferries that dock at different locations in the
downtown; Venice has its gondoliers, Singapore its fleets of rickshaws,
et cetera.
If the travel mode involves air—hot air balloon, helicopter—or
some form of boat, make sure there is alternate transport available
for guests that are uncomfortable with these forms of travel. One person’s
treat can be another’s terror.
