Depending on the size of the museum or gallery, it can hold any size
of event. The setting is usually spectacular, there are often smaller
auditoriums available for lectures, screenings, trainings, etc., and
the venue gives the event a unique “wow” factor. For example,
the Temple of Deneb hall, in the Egyptian galleries of the New York’s
Metropolitan Museum,
is often seen as the backdrop for high-end corporate events, fundraising
galas, media
launches, fashion shows, and society weddings.
Booking an event into a museum
or gallery will pose extra organizational challenges. There are rules
designed to protect the artwork and artifacts. The site’s security
guards must be hired for the duration of the load in, actual event,
and load out. There may be restrictions on where food & beverage
service can occur. The cafeteria’s kitchen may be available for
an outside caterer’s use, but often they are not. It may be part
of the labor contract that any set up and/or clean up be done by the
venue’s regular staff, which can be expensive. Audiovisual
requirements will need to be rented separately.
